This is where the fun begins!
For some this may seem like an odd category, but collectibles have been a serious hobby, lifelong pursuit or even a full time vocation for a long time.
We collect coins, stamps, vintage toys, electronics, radios, books, posters, computers, watches, figurines, and on and on. For me I have a shelf full of books that are well over a hundred years old and being an avid reader, they are a joy to see on my shelf each day. The intricate details on the covers and spines are truly beautiful. Being an amateur radio operator I also have a vintage Kenwood HF rig.. it’s a magnificent hybrid transceiver with vintage vacuum tubes as well as solid state components.
Sometimes we collect for the financial aspects and other times it’s simply a connection to nostalgia and happy memories.
When I was a child I remember saving allowance money to buy a LEGO kit and then as an adult I had the joy of building LEGO sets with my daughter. Having grown up with the NASA space program and the original Star Wars movies, building and displaying sets of the Space Shuttle, Saturn V rocket, the Millennium Falcon, etc, have a deep personal meaning culturally and in terms of purely fond childhood memories… watching shuttle launches from the Cape, seeing Darth Vader and hearing the scream of TIE fighters and X-Wings for the very fist time in a theatre, building a Harry Potter set with my daughter!
I have a friend who has created numerous custom tumblrs and some of her designs are truly unreal. One particular halloween design that she created just floored me in both it’s detail and creativity… she ended up gifting me one and it’s proudly on display on my bookshelf with my more gothic titles (Edgar Allen Poe, etc).
Regardless of why or what you collect, from vintage watches to rare action figures, photographing them to bring out the quality that connects those items to us in a meaningful way is something that resonates deeply with me…
The top image on this page is something I created using the smaller LEGO TIE fighter sets and then designing a custom background to place them onto! It was quite the project!
